Consortium of Indigenous Knowledge Research Universities (CIKRU)
Background
There have been a growing recognition of the value and relevance of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) in addressing global challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, food security, health, and governance. However, mainstream academic institutions have often marginalized or undervalued these knowledge systems, resulting in gaps in research, policy impact, and intergenerational knowledge transmission.
To bridge this gap and reposition Indigenous Knowledge as a cornerstone for inclusive and transformative development, a group of visionary universities and research institutions have established the Consortium of Indigenous Knowledge Research Universities (CIKRU). This Consortium serves as a collaborative platform for promoting research, innovation, advocacy, and capacity building on Indigenous Knowledge systems globally and comparatively.
Purpose of the Consortium
The Consortium aims to foster a collaborative network of universities and communities committed to the documentation, validation, dissemination, and integration of Indigenous Knowledge in academic curricula, research, policy, and community development practices. It will serve as a bridge between Indigenous communities and academic institutions, ensuring co-creation and mutual respect in knowledge production and application.
